What they do
The Fortune Society runs a one-stop model for people leaving jail or prison in New York City. From its Long Island City hub it offers transitional housing at the Fortune Academy and permanent housing at Castle Gardens, employment services, education, substance use and mental health treatment, health services, food, family services, benefits enrollment and creative arts. It runs court-based alternatives to incarceration, a pre-release program inside facilities, and a policy center that advocates for alternatives to prison. Founded in 1967 by David Rothenberg after he produced the Off-Broadway play Fortune and Men's Eyes.
